Soluble Fibre And The Feeling Of Enough

You can eat a perfectly reasonable amount of food and be hungry an hour later. That is not greed. It is largely a question of how long the meal stays with you.

Fullness is a mechanical signal before it is a chemical one

There are hormonal fullness signals, and they matter. But the first and bluntest input is physical: stretch receptors in the stomach wall report that there is something there. That signal fades as the stomach empties, and it fades fast on food that is quick to move through.

This is why a large plate of something light can leave you unsatisfied while a smaller, denser meal holds. Volume matters less than how long the volume persists.

What soluble fibre does about it

Soluble fibre — pectin being one of the best-studied examples — absorbs water and forms a gel. The practical consequence is that the stomach empties more slowly. The meal you already ate keeps producing the signal for longer.

Pectin is what makes jam set, which is a genuinely useful way to picture it. It is doing something similar, gently, to the contents of your stomach.

There is a second effect that operates on a longer timescale. Soluble fibre is fermented by gut bacteria, and most adults eat well under the fibre they need. That is why the change people most often report first is not appetite at all — it is that their digestion has settled down.

The uncomfortable first week

This part gets left out of most marketing and it should not be. When you add soluble fibre to a gut that has not been getting much, the bacteria that ferment it get busier. More fermentation means more gas. For a week, sometimes two, some people are windier and a bit bloated.

It settles. It settles faster if you drink more water, because fibre needs water to do the thing it is supposed to do. And it is worth knowing in advance, because a fair number of people quit supplements in week one over a symptom that was always going to be temporary.

What this does not do

Slowing gastric emptying does not create a calorie deficit. It makes holding one less unpleasant, which is a real thing but a different thing. If the portions do not change, the fibre has nothing to help with.

It also is not a substitute for eating actual fibre. A supplement contributing to your daily intake is a supplement doing its job; vegetables, pulses, oats and fruit doing the bulk of it is still the better arrangement, and it comes with everything else those foods carry.

Where pectin sits in the formula is set out on inside the formula.
